]]>2022/23 Local Government & Schools Pay offer is for one year and it is as follows:
The employers have already agreed to complete the work of the joint term-time only review group and have begun discussions on homeworking policies but are not prepared to discuss a homeworking allowance. On Mileage Allowances, the LGA has agreed to make representation to the HMRC.
However, the employers have rejected the following elements of the pay claim:
Our demand in the pay claim was fair: we wanted a pay award that keeps pace with inflation; a Covid recognition payment, a review of term time only contracts and consideration of retainers; a reduction in the working week (without loss of pay) to 35 hours (34 hours in London); a review of mileage rates.
NEXT STEPS
GMB Senior reps across Local Authorities, Schools and Academies will be meeting today (Wednesday 3rd August 2022) At this meeting a timetable will be agreed for a pay ballot. In GMB, all members have their say on pay. Make sure all your membership contact details are up to date.

Your rights at work in the heat
There is no legal maximum temperature for workplaces in the UK, but that doesn’t stop your employer from taking extra precautions to keep you safe. GMB has called for a maximum temperature of 25C, in line with the advice of the World Health Organisation.
We hope you are keeping safe and cool in the heat.
“Pets get more protection than people!” Countries all over the world have legal maximum workplace temperatures – why don’t we?
Tom Rigby, GMB Midlands Health & Safety Officer, spoke with the BBC about why GMB Union is calling for legal limits on workplace temperatures.
We’re stronger when we work together, why not forward this important information to a friend or colleague not protected by GMB at work yet? They can join online at www.gmb.org.uk/join and will be protected from day one

]]>GMB Union, one of Britain’s largest refuse and household waste collection unions, has today warned that a dispute with Serco Sandwell could escalate, as 96% of members vote to back industrial action.
The warning has come as GMB members in Sandwell rejected a real terms pay cut from the provider of household waste collection services in the Sandwell area, Serco.
Justine Jones, GMB lead for refuse members in Sandwell, said:
]]>“There is the very real risk of waste piling up in streets at the height of the Commonwealth games if this issue is not resolved.
Our members want nothing more than to get on with their job, keeping local communities safe and clean, exactly as they did throughout the pandemic.
The derisory pay offer from Serco, a company that has generated millions during the pandemic, flies in the face of that. Serco top brass are essentially asking our members, Sandwell’s hard working refuse workers, to do the same job for less.
The Commonwealth Games are an opportunity to showcase the best of our area, but Serco must do their bit and bring an offer to the table that allows Sandwell’s refuse workers to keep pace with the cost of living crisis”.

]]>Thank you to all GMB members who responded to recent surveys regarding your aspirations for pay this year. All of the results were collated and considered by your GMB teams of Officers and Reps and the GMBs National Local Government and Schools Committees.
GMBs National Committees agreed that our claim should include: an increase of no less than RPI; a Covid recognition payment, review of term time only contracts and consideration of retainers; a reduction in the working week (without loss of pay) to 35 hours (34 hours in London); a review of mileage rates.
GMB presented this claim to Unison and Unite in discussions to agree this year’s joint union pay claim. The final pay claim, as agreed by all three unions, and which has now been submitted is:
· A headline claim of an increase of £2,000 on each pay point, or of the current RPI rate, whichever is the greater
· A Covid-19 recognition payment
· Review of term time only contracts and consideration of retainers
· Reduction in the working week (without loss of pay) to 35 hours (34 in London)
· One additional day of annual leave across the board
· Introduction of a home working allowance for all staff who are working from home
· A national minimum agreement on homeworking policies for all councils
· A separate urgent review of all mileage rates currently applying
I work in a school, does the pay claim affect me?
This Pay Claim is for all Local Authority Maintained Schools and the vast majority of Academy Trust Schools.
For any Academy Trust that does not automatically apply NJC Pay settlements GMB will submit separate claims with the Employer. These Pay Claims will be exactly the same as detailed above to try and ensure consistency and continuity for all School and Academy support staff.
Employers will now consider the pay claim ahead of pay negotiations starting.
Resource pack for Local Government & Schools members and reps will be updated and circulated shortly.
Workplace visits will be starting shortly.

The price of everything is going up – but key workers’ wages aren’t. Ministers partied while people died. And now they do nothing while living standards plummet and P&O lays off hundreds of workers on the spot.

]]>After a lengthy dispute with their employer regarding fairness at work which resulted in Industrial Action across seven leisure centres last week (Tuesday 10th May 2022) GMB, Unison and Unite members working at Sandwell Leisure Trust have won their fight for fairness and a return to nationally agreed terms & conditions.
Sandwell Leisure Trust have agreed to union demands to return to nationally agreed terms & conditions. This will mean that workers at the Trust can be confident of a strong union representation and fair pay through a return to national pay structures at the Trust.
One GMB member said at hearing the news:
“This is a stunning result, its been a hard couple of years, this victory is a testament to everyone who had the courage of their convictions to never stop fighting for what is right. There really is power in a union”
Darren James, GMB Sandwell Branch Secretary, said:
“This is a big win for workers at Leisure facilities across Sandwell. After months of campaigning, we have shown what we can do when we fight and stand together.
Our strike saw GMB members join other unions in delivering a clear and unmissable message to Sandwell Leisure Trust Management; our members demand fairness at work.
GMB won’t stand by as employers undermine the hard won rights of our members at work. Join GMB and get us on your side today”.

]]>After Sandwell Leisure Trust refused to discuss a pay claim put forward by GMB, Unison and Unite members at the end of 2021, members across all 9 sites operated by the Trust undertook an Industrial ballot which has returned an overwhelming majority in favour of taking action over pay.
Sarah James, Branch Equality Officer said: This result sends a clear message to the SLT management and the Trust board – GMB members have had enough.
Whilst providing a valuable lifestyle service to the people of Sandwell, staff are drowning under the cost of living and it’s time that our members are paid a fair wage.
GMB along with sister Unions will be meeting with members to decide next steps shortly, but we urge Sandwell Leisure Trust to come to the table with a decent pay offer to avoid strikes over the next few months.
]]>]]>GMB Regional Organiser Justine Jones said:Whilst GMB Union welcome the news that a Labour controlled council have removed the contract from an employer who recently fired and rehired their employees with the threat of poorer terms and conditions hanging over staff, we will continue to fight to protect members jobs with the aim of returning them to decent pay, terms and conditions.
