International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) is on April 28th 2026.
It commemorates workers killed or injured, with a focus on “Remember the Dead, Fight for the Living”. Every year, more people lose their lives because of work than in wars. These aren’t mysterious illnesses or unavoidable accidents — too often, they’re the result of safety being treated as an afterthought.
On International Workers’ Memorial Day it is a time to remember those who have died due to their work.
It’s also a moment to stand together — as a community and a movement — to honour them, and to recommit ourselves to protecting the living and making every workplace safer.

GMB alongside other local unions and Sandwell council will be marking International Workers’ Memorial Day by remembering those who have been killed or injured due to work-related accidents or illnesses.
The day involves memorial services, wreath laying and a one-minute silence will be observed at 11 am outside the front entrance of Sandwell council house (by the link reception )
We invite all staff and members to join us in showing solidarity, paying our respects, and standing together for safer workplaces.
If you would like to attend please arrive outside Sandwell council house at 10.45
