GMB Sandwell welcome updated guidance from Public Health in Sandwell regarding covid cases in our schools.
In the light of the COVID transmission rates in schools, Public Health have reviewed DfE guidance alongside latest medical evidence. Going forward, when a case is identified in a class the advice from Sandwell’s Public Health team will be to isolate all members in that class. This is due to the increased risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19 in enclosed spaces (eg classrooms) over an extended period (eg a class period). To protect staff and students as much as possible, particularly in the Winter months when air flow is restricted to retain heat in teaching areas, we will now recommend that all class members are isolated.
Donna Spencer, GMB Sandwell education convenor said: “As the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt throughout Sandwell and beyond, the decision by Sandwell’s Public Health team is welcomed and will go some way to alleviate fears of our members”
